I just purchased a 1986 F-250 4x4 w/ 196,000 miles, it has a New 300-L6 and a rebuilt Transfer case, I would like to go through the front and rear ends, transfer case and Manual Transmission and replace all the fluids. Does anyone know exactly what each one takes?, without me having to pull each one. How much oil and what kind? In the past I have always used synthetic oils, is there any drawbacks or things I should consider if i was to use synthetics on this old of a truck? I am also looking for a good tailgate if anyone has one. Thanks for your time. Newbie For Owner.
The Haynes workshop manual ($12 at most parts stores) lists all fluid types & capacities in the tune-up chapter. It's the single best investment you can make if you plan on keeping & maintaining your truck.
If you don't have an owner's manual for your truck, I'll second Steve's recommendation on the Haynes manual.
In the meantime this may be of some help...
300 I-6: 6 quarts motor oil with filter
axles: 4-6 pints gear oil, depending on which axle
manual trans: 5-7 pints gear oil, depending on which trans
transfer case: 6-7 pints ATF for Borg Warner-1345 or NP-208. (If it's not one of those two it might take gear oil. That's why you need to get a manual or positively ID the xfer case.)
For what kind of oil to use and questions about synthetic oils you might want to check out the Oil and Lubrication forum dedicated to that topic. For the tailgate, check the 'classifieds' section on the upper RH of the forums page. We try not to post FS or WTB on the forums.
