Oh geeze i almost wanted to quit working at the local garage today, an intergra LS came into the shop today for new upper and lower ball joints and an alignment, well i get it up on the lift, take the front end up with the front end jack, get passenger side tire off just fine, take a look at it, looks like an easy job, so i was like okay i'll rip both sides down and put it back togeather, it was a basic operation, so i put the impact on the driver side to take the tire off, a stud snaps, i get mad, happens to be around lunch time, i got out to subway and think about what the hell happened, so i come back i take off the other 3 lugs, guess what, to get that snapped stud out you have to pull the whole strut assembly and try to get the pressed bearing out of the groove w/o messing it up so you dont have 12-15 ***** to find, doing pressed bearing isnt the problem, its just that i have to pay for bearing and what not on my own, and those bearing are 56$ at cost so i get it, put it back on, and i went to tighten with torque wrench, i set it at 70 ft lbs, and snaped off a stud on the passenger side, and the manual called for 85 ft lbs, What is wrong with honda?!?! it costed me money to go to work today!
If the stud snapped at 70# it was already stressed somehow. Probably the other stud was the same. I would not fix it at my own expense. If the customer wants to drive a Honda they should pay for the parts and time it takes to fix it. Flat rate assumes there is nothing wrong with the vehicle other than the basic repair. Call the customer and tell them what the additional repairs are going to cost. If they don't want to pay they can have it towed to another shop. The three studs will hold long enuf to load it on a roll-off. Someone at another shop probably torqued the studs to 100 ft-lb and they were cracked.
well, really i wouldnt have really cared about paying for the parts, it is a friend of my brothers car, but it was the fact that he was bitching to me cause he wanted the car the same day so i didnt finish up the car, no i dont own the shop, but its like i rent a working booth/Make all profit pay my own utilities or w/e so it is kinda like owning my own, but bleh i didnt go into work today lol
Yeah, there are laws here that if you break something at work you are not responsible and the employer must cover it. If it's a common thing the employer will weed you out eventually but I'm sure that's not the case.
Hey 1980_f_100..... Don't you know that hondas are built better and higher in quality then the American Trucks we drive ( YEAH RIGHT ) !
The broken stud had nothing to do with the quality of the car. Some one had probably overtightened it. A few years ago, I bought a new Escort for my wife. When we tried to rotate the tires, two studs broke ... stuff happens.

You should charge by the hour. I do and as long as they are not in harm's way and do not talk to me (distraction) the customer is free to watch and to ask questions later. I have a lot of people pull up a chair and watch me do their brake job. I am going to do it the same with them there or not and if something breaks, hey! You saw it happen and it needs to be replaced.
I tell everyone, if something breaks and it is not my fault you have to replace it at my labor rate.
I have had studs break/strip taking wheels off, it is not Honda's fault. It was most likely put on by a moron using an impact wrench going by "feel" at 140+ foot pounds. Many times, a person can not budge a nut, so they plug the tire and take it somewhere for a "brake job" and when the stud breaks they expect you to fix it for free.
