I am trying to put the dash back in my '60 and cannot figure out how to get the little rod to stay in switch to turn the lights on and off...... thanks for your help.
Here is what I have from the shop manual.....apparently there is a difference between the HD trucks and the light duty trucks.
For a heavy duty switch is says, "remove the control **** and shaft by pressing the ****-release button on the switch housing, with the **** in the OFF position. Turn the shaft slightly, and pull it out of the switch." To install it the manual goes on..."insert the **** and shaft assembly by inserting it all the way into the switch until a distinct click is heard. If necessary, rotate the shaft slightly until it engages the switch-contact carrier."
It says that for light duty trucks, the headlight switch is removed in the same manner - but doesn't mention anything about removing/installing the **** and shaft.
On the top of the switch, on the part that dips down, there is a small metal tab(not the nylon one on th e very top) press down on the tab while pulling out on the switch(switch has to be turned off which is counter clock wise). -4speed

Unless I'm reading wrong, you are trying to put the shaft back into the switch?
Press down on the tab/button that 4-speed mentioned and hold it down BEFORE pushing the shaft in. If the shaft still wont go in, try "jiggling" the shaft and button while pushing in. Also, the shaft should be 3 sided and you may have to try all 3 sides. Tecnically you shouldn't, but it worked for me.
