mlb4966 is right--the controller is not sensing any brakes. The red dot will come on every time you hit the brakes when the trailer IS NOT connected. If the controller is working, it will read 0.5 to 6.0 according to how it is set. It should read ERR if there is a short in the system somewhere.
I went back to where I bought the trailer this morning. There were two problems. The trailer plug had a loose wire, and the plug on the rear of the truck was for a different application. The number on the box it came in did not match the number on the plug. Everything works fine now. Thanks again for all your help.
I should have included "if the controller doesn't have reverse-voltage protection" when I said DON'T pull the breakaway switch pin while the trailer is plugged into the tow vehicle. A lot of controllers aren't protected this way.
Yep 001-F Dorf was correct go for the simple fix first. I never seem to have that work for me. You will enjoy having the brakes if you havent had them before.
