Wacky Tachometer

Hey dose any one know how to get the factory tach working on my '85 6.9L. I started jumping from 500 to 2000 and then just went **** up on me. I can't figure out where the pickup sensor is or the wireing set up for this thing Thanks for any help

your tach sensor is located on your timing gear cover

new tac sensor is or was 99.50 with tax from ford for my 94 7.3 idi non turbo

cool thanks for the help ill try that... do you know of a voltmeter test you can perform to check the sensor

I have heard some people fixing it by just removing it and cleaning it. I am not sure if a voltage test or a resistance (ohm) test is needed.

Mine did the same thing after I bought it. I was able to get it fixed by just cleaning the sensor.
If I remember correctly the output is an AC voltage between 0 and 40 volts. So set the volt meter to AC and measure the volts while the engine is running more volts=more RPM.
