aiight i have a 94' ford ranger w/ 4.0 and 4x4. i was wondering if i have abs? well im assuming i do cuz i have an abs light that flickers on when i turn my truc k on, but it sure doesnt seem to work! on our 94' explorer you can hear when the abs brakes kick in but i dont have that sound w/ mine and my brakes just lock up!
any ideas?
I have a 94 B4000, I have very similar indications. I don't hear the normal ABS sound. But I resently locked up my truck on some mild ice. and I had a different kind of clicking/banging noise and my truck stopped in a reasonable time. I believe that my ABS is working just fine.
My theroy:
I believe, that these trucks only have "rear" abs. And because there useally isn't much weight on the rear they will just lock. ABS senses slipping when one tire is turning at a different rate then another and then modulates the brakes. If it only compares the two rears, they will be at zero MPH very quickly (instantly) and ABS wouldn't "kick-in". As for the noise, it would be in the back of the truck and Drum brakes(as opposed to disks that are used in most ABS systems), and may not sound the same as a 4 wheel ABS system.
