I would spend about 3500 on the motor and 2500 on the C6. Your transmission has to handle the power the engine puts out. Your combo is the same my buddy runs in his 59. I have a 429 C6 and love it. You can make the C6 pretty stout. Upgrade all the components you can. They are an easy rebuild. Good luck.
the c-6 from your FE will not bolt up to a 429. sorry to burst your bubble. i believe a c-6 from a 351m-400 will bolt up to the 429 though. i would just builld a stout FE with aluminum heads, intake, etc. but thats just me. long live the FE!
im not sure on the crate engine. if you have a good reputable machine shop (i.e. FE knowlegdeable) that can do the machine work, you can do the assembly. check out steve christs book avaliable here on this site. its a great FE manual. plus you can post any questions on the FE forum. those guys are fantabulous and a wealth of info. you might check the sponsors of this site for crate info. or do a google search. good luck.
hey 69er, would a 427 bolt up to my C6 bell housing without mod? this is an FE block, correct? i really don't have the time nor the resource to start building a new motor, I am looking for straight r&r. thanks for your continued help.
yes the 427 will bolt up, but thats not a good motor so youd better get rid of it... hey ill give you a $100 for it! you might check speed-o-motive, k u n tz and company, or keith craft for a crate engine. my buddies got a 9 second 63 1/2 galaxie that k u n tz did the motor in.
Sorry, I think we misunderstood each other. The Fe and the 385 series engines have different bell housings. I thought you were replacing a FE with another FE. I was using my 429/c6 as an example. Do you want to change engine series? Are you looking for any motor or just one that makes 400hp? What are your plans? What motor do you want in there?
#2 my pference is big block (FE included); i do not want to have to swap out everything else to r&r the motor i.e. tranny; i do not have time nor facility to build a motor; i want loads of HP and gobs to TQ i.e. 500/500 would be the goal.
sorry dude i was being sarcastic about the 427 not being any good. its a rare and desirable motor. youre blessed if youve got one. if you had a 390-say and put edelbrock heads and rpm intake with the right cam selection youre going to be over 400 ponies. more if youve got the 427-428 plus more low end torque. check those sites out and see if they offer any complete engine packages.
thanks for the clarification, sorry for being a little slow on the uptake about the 427 not being good. i thought i was missing something.
that said, i understand 427's to be rare motors in the junk yard, however you can buy a 427 long-block crate motor on the net, and these should bolt up to my FE/c6 bell housing correct? or am i missing something ??
otherwise, i might go for a 460 crate ($7000) and trash the current tranny for a bolt on c6 which marries the 460. dam the topedoes!
