I looked at an 84 (I believe, sorry been a few days, so lets assume so) Bronco II, it was a 2.8 and it was carbed, I was there looking at FS broncos with my brother in law, but quickly glanced at this as we were passing by.
I dont frequent your guys fine forum, as I dont own one, and didnt see any general engine and tranny numbers in Kens tech info sticky...Searching yielded A LOT of hits on the 2.8, many (all) of which werent relevant at all.
I'd like some general information on Bronco II's (please dispel myths I have heard about their lack of reliability) and more importantly Id like some DETAILED general information about the 2.8 six motor and its habits and performance, and transmission choices for this vehicle, I prefer autos in my trucks, but it isnt necessary, especially in something that Im buying for fuel mileage and reliability, I have enough toys, just after a decent little truck/SUV for a 4wd daily driver, so I dont need ball busting power, I already have it in other places (see sig) all I need is fuel mileage, 4wd, and enough power to get out of its own way
Im sorry to bother with such a general question, I just havent happened across any in my lurking in here, thanks guys....looking forward to being more of a regular contributor to this forum.
The 2.8L is the same design in the 74 Ford and Mercury Capri vehicles. They are known to burn oil and smoke when they reach high mileage. The rubber valve seal deteriorates and leaks oil into the cylinders. The 2.8 comes with 2-bbl carb. There's performance stuff out there for these if that's what you're looking into doing. I believe that both auto and manual are available. The 2.8L put out 115 hp @ 4600 rpm, and 150 lb/ torque @ 2600. And I haven't heard any myth's of them not being reliable. I've had mine for 2 years coming up on Jan 11th , and the only problem I had was driveshaft busting, and now it's guaranteed not to do it again. But I consider them to be very reliable, I didn't think I would get a year with mine, but I'm thinking I'm gonna make it a while.
Only the 1984 B2 came with a C5 auto tranny, usually the kind of tranny you find behind a V8. All other years come with the 4ALD tranny that barely withstand V6 power (2.8, 2.9 are OK but 4.0L can shred one in pieces). Anyway the truck you are looking for would have a C5 or a manual (which I don't know the name or specs, maybe someone else can help on this one)
For the axles: rear is 7.5 usually 3.78 or 3.45 and Front should be a Dana 28TTB.
