Tire ratings?

I was going to get some slightly bigger (285X75 16) off road type tires but found out that most are only "D" rated instead of "E" that came stock. Is it ok to run the "D" rated tires? I only tow a 4,500 lb. boat and rarely hall much weight!

For what you're towing and depending on the ratings of the "D" tires you get, you should be fine. There are quite a few D rated tires that have the same weight ratings as E rated ones.

if you get the d rated tire your tire life will be shorter if you tow alot the super duty is hard on tire already and going to the d rated will make it worse. at least that is been my experience.

I've ran for several years with trucks towing with D rated tires. Never a problem, but also never loads above 10,000lbs. I've used quality tires and haven't exceded 80% of rated capacity. Your load wouldn't even come close to exceding the load capacity if properly inflated D rated tire. I hate the E rated Generals on my Super Duty. They'll be gone by late spring! High mileage AT's? They suck in the snow, they suck in the mud. That's when I want them to perform! I'll take traction over high mileage any time. Do be sure to get a tire with the most side wall plys you can find. Do some research. I have my preferences... I have my dislikes.

I just put BFG AT's on my F-250 and they pull my 10K load wonderful. The carrying weight per tire is as much or more than the BFG Rugged Trail Load Range E's that were on my truck. Plus they have a 3-ply sidewall compared to the 2 ply in the BFG Rugged Trails. I am going to the Ice Bowl in Talladega Alabama next Friday to race. I will let you know how they work out on a long pull.

I have a 2004 F250 CC FX4 that I put 285-75-16 Bridgestone A/T Revo's on at 500 miles and have been very pleased with them. I found that they do fairly well in snow because on a recent hunting trip to Colorado they performed better in snow than my friend's identical F250 that was running the OEM BFG 10 ply tires. I pulled a 16 ft. trailer loaded a about 6200 lbs. with no problem. I ran 60psi in rear and 55psi in front. Your call, but with the tow weight you described, I think you are OK with D range tires. Also, after checking with a stopwatch and a GPS, I found that the speedometer and odometer is exactly correct when using the 285-75-16 tires. Good Luck!

rstokes, I was about to say the samething about the speedometer. Mine was 3.4 MPH off at 70 MPH with the stock tires. Now the Speedometer is correct since I went to the 285's
