Starting engine vs electrical

Hello, and I am lost, in the electrical world of a 1968 F-350. Everything worked great till this morning when I got up, and went to start the truck. Dead battery, not unusual, but on closer inspection, I noticed that when I turned the key to the start engine position, the amp meter, pegged all the way on the discharge side, I did leave a backup light on for a few hours a couple of days ago, and it started just fine till this morning. Have replaced the starter solonoid, and voltage regulator, none of that helped. Any ideas as to what would cause this, would be greatly appreciated, as I have never seen anything like this before at all. If you jump the truck, it will start and run, but the amp meter still pegs discharge, all the way. Alternator? Battery? Im lost and could sure use a little help. Thanks

Check your battery voltage with everything is turned off. Also check it when its running and while cranking.
Use a voltmeter and post results.
