PINGING - How Much Is Normal

Hi All,

I have a 1990 F150, 300 Six. I just set the timing since I get some pinging when loaded or going up hills. It seemed to help, but not sure if it completely fixed the problem. I just want to make sure I am not wrecking my engine since this truck takes me on . It has good oil pressure (23 idle, 50 @1500 rpm) and last time I checked had good compression 145 -150 psi. I drive it mostly on weekends since I have a work truck. Now that I don't drive it much I am doubting my memory of what this truck sounded like when I got it 3 years and 30k ago, is the noise I hear on hard acceleration normal or cause to worry? Doesn't sound like hard pinging, more a little light clatter like a diesel would make. Does it every time I accelerate hard. I am probably fine, but just wanted to check and see what others hear in their engines since this is the only Ford six I have owned.

Pinging is never really normal. You reset the timing so that kills that, assuming the advance is normal. Check the EGR for proper operation. If it's not working , that can cause overly high combustion temps, and more pinging. Make sure you are not overheating. Running hot can cause more pinging. Check, or clean any carbon in the chambers, etc..Last but not least, make sure the gas is high enough octane to run the engine. You may have to bump up a grade to cure this problem on grades, etc...MK

I have tried using 89 octane. That helps, but doesn't really find the cause of the problem. It is not running hot and can start to ping before it is even fully warmed up. EGR may be worth checking out. Maybe I will do a seafoam on it to clean out carbon also. I don't get enough long trips on it, but I do use it once or twice a year to tow the boat up north. I want it to be reliable enough to go 200 miles from home. Thanks for the reply.
