Unhappy Hesitation and Sputtering?

I own an '86 Ford Bronco II with a 2.9L. I have a condition that started out with minor hesitation and surging associated with decreased fuel mileage. Now about a month and a half later I'm having the worst problems of my life. I now have hesitation and sputtering almost all time along with extremely poor fuel mileage (7mpg) and black smoke when accelerating (which would indicate a very rich mixture). To date I have tried everything I know. I've replaced the Distributor Cap and Rotor, Plugs, Plug Wires, Ignition Coil, O2 sensor, IAT, ECT, air filter, and fuel filter. I even went as far as "removing the contents" of my cat because I was concerned about back pressure. I was wondering if my FPR was bad and how I could tell? I'm running out of ideas before giving up and letting a mechanic fix it (which I dont want to do). Would my IAC or my TPS cause these same symptoms? If anyone has and ideas that would be great. Thanks

1st thing to do, especially on an '86, is to pull codes from the computer. Only requires a paper clip and a voltmeter or test light. Instructions in the tech info post or www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html under tests.

FPR (and overall fuel delivery system) is best tested with a fuel pressure gauge. Instructions for testing the fuel pressure are also in Ken00's tech info post.

Welcome to FTE!!

In addition to mrshorty's info....

Run it for a minute, shut it down, pull the vacuum line off the FPR, if you find gas it's bad.

I also have black smoke 86 2.9L ranger

sometimes it bucks, jirks and misfires as the black smoke pours out the back. huge loss of power under load. If i rev the snot out of it it seams to clear the fule load for a bit and then it's back. I have done all the things that the other guy has done and replaced the MAP sensor. NO CHANGE! it will run just great for a few minints 5 to 10 and then loads up un fule and tries to drouned it self. Could this be the EGR and the EGR feedback sensor? also would and exhast leek from the gasget infront of the cat pipe cause a o2 malfunction to richen the fule??

Did you try the things we suggested?

An exhaust leak can draw air in and this will make the O2 think the engine is running lean so the ECU will make it to rich.

No on the EGR.

My '89 B2 was doing this same thing, except no smoke. It got cooler and everything is running good again. I still have no idea what it is/was.

o2 sensor/exhast leek

Ken would the richening be most apparent after a sustaned exceleration and then decelleratio then back on the gass again? I guess my question is would a strong deceleration pull outside air in through the leek in the exhast?

I would expect the higher the flow the more air it would pull in.

I had the same thing

Well I am no pro but I'll tell ya it sounds like what my BII was doing. I took it in and got a new pickup inside the distributor and a new tfi module and a bit of a tune up and its good now ...I had done the same as you replaced basically all the stuff you did till I took it in and it was tfi and the pick up inside distibutor ...
