Question Fresh 302 Oil Usage

Had a 302 rebuilt about 6,500 miles ago in 73 Bronco. It is using about 1 quart every 500 miles, yet no smoke, leaks...? Have already had it back to the engine builder and he found nothing wrong (according to him) saying the compression was fine and there was no blow-by. I'm not a traditional Ford guy so I am not familiar with the possible qirks of these motors, any ideas??????

From: Destin/Ft. Walton Beach,
It's possible oil is being sucked through the pcv valve, if it isn't getting past your rings. I use Total Seal Zero Gap rings on engines that I build. Because they seal so well, vacuum is increased quite a bit. Total Seal recommends that the vacuum line going to the pcv be blocked off most of the way. I just insert a smaller hose inside the larger hose. Not sure what your problem actually is though. No engine should go through oil, so it is not a traight of a Ford engine.

Bad valve stem seals will cause this problem. Allows oil to be sucked past the intake valve stem on each intake stroke. I had an engine that used oil about the way you describe. Started out as a brand new engine. Used oil from the very start. When I finally pulled the heads, the back side of the intake valves were caked with carbon from all the oil comming through. Good luck.

If its not leaking its burning it, Is there any evidence of oil on the bell housing or crossmember area? It could be a bad or improperly installed rear main seal that blowes out oil on hwy conditions. I would also send in an Oil Analysis on this engine, its fairly inexpensive way to determine which parts are wearing more quickly than other parts, as different componets are made of different materials. If the IOA shows normal, Then the heads come off for more testing.
