'95 Ranger Won't Stay Running

My 1995 Ranger (manual, 2WD) won't stay running! I can start it (by giving it a lot of gas) but when I take my foot off the gas, it dies out. There was also a loud bang from under the passenger side when I was trying to get it going...

Never had this problem before. Only 86,000 miles. There are NOT any engine lights on...

There is a sticker under the hood about some kind of reset fuel switch, but I can't find it... Could reseting this switch help?

Maybe there is condensation in the fuel line?

PLEASE HELP!!! I'm a student with no money to give a mechanic!

THANKS!

Also, my dome light stays on, so I just keep the switch in between DOOR and ON, any suggestions?

Must have edited the 2.6L part.

Also the switch you refered to is under the passenger's toe area near the hump and firewall. However, I don't think that is your problem since it is supposed to cut the fuel supply all together. So if the truck will fire up and not stay running you may be right about the condensation or air even.

Did you recently run out of gas? My truck does this when I run out of gas (the gauge is very inaccurate). So I carry a 1 gallon gas can and a can of "starter fluid" to spray down the TB to get it going again. It sometimes takes several tries to get all the air out of mine, but it will fire up.

No, my gas gauge is very accurate. It is at 1/2 tank right now. (Even if it was inaccurate, I monitor my gas by keping an eye on my trip miles).

I cleaned the battery connection yesterday (thinking it might be that) and then it started up and ran fine. This morning, it was the same thing, though.

Should I just get some of that dry gas stuff to get any water out of the fuel?

Read that Tech tip from Ken00....second item just as you log on to forums...about the idle air control valve....supposedly a real problem on all 95-6 rangers. Has pictures of one on a V6. same one different location.

Location on yours is atop intake at rear...bolts face to firewall (use wd40 first) ...should be 5/16 size, Remove and clean all carbon. reinstall.

Remove the bulb from the dome light if "flock shooting" the door switch with WD40 doesn't cure the problem. (may be stuck you see)

pull the codes (autozone may be able to pull them) and check fuel pressure

The idle problem could also be a vacuum leak. Have you done anything to the engine that could have disconnected or disturbed a vacuum line?

well, im no expert but I think the loud bang from the pass side may have been a backfire from the exhaust. If its getting any fuel at all its not because of the fuel shut off switch( it kills the fuel pump all together) If its some sort of fuel prob. Id first try the pump by turning the key to run, but not crank to listen for the noise of the pump, and if that is functionable... then check the filter which is under the drivers seat frame rail(disconnects and new filter from autozone). that many miles could have a plugged fuel filter(real cheap). has the truck had any kind of tune up lately? plug wires crossed or not connected? I would just check for any loose grounds anywhere or any loose conections between fittings. also you can use a bit of throttle body/carb cleaner to help search for vac leaks.thats true any vac.leak could cause serious probs. like I said, im no expert but looking carefully and cheching fittings has helped me.. good luck brother

Thanks everyone. I ended up taking it to my mechanic. He gave her a full exam and is going to replace the fuel filter, and do a tune-up -- she still had original plugs and wires! At 86,000 and being a 1995, that's pretty old!

He thinks that the thumping may be the timing belt skipping teeth -- he's gonna check and see if it is cracked, worn, etc. Does this sound right?

Thanks again!

hes probably correct. my timing belt would thump against the timing cover like crazy because it was sooo old.

Yes those are old plugs and wires. Don't feel bad though, my 88' had the OE fuel filter at 112k when I bought it. (well it looked original anyway)

His suggestions sound reasonable, hopefully his prices are too.
