well, Im #4..lol..i have the first (78) and the last (96) full size broncos. the 78 is worn, but starts everyday and the 96 took us through a big hit by a dwd. I may look at the escape, but if it has the same junk engine as the contour/mystique..forget it..check out the CEG message board and the contour/mys recalls.
The Escape is going to have the 2.5 or 3.0 engine they are the same engine except for bore or stroke. As far as engines in Contours being junk the 2.5 is the same engine in the Contours(if the Contour has a v6)
All of these engines are based on the early yamaha engines put in the SHO Taurus. These engines are far from junk. I get 20 MPG city and 30Mpg hway and the engine redline is 7000 rpms. I don't know what's going on you must have had a bad experience with a Contour, just because one engine had aproblem doesn't mean they're all junk. So far I have had NO Problems.
LAST EDITED ON 18-Sep-00 AT 00:17 AM (EST)[p]Ford stopped making the Bronco just because of "OJ car chase" back in 1996. It was a great truck! hey, Ford bring back the Bronco truck! Front wheel drive cars are WEAK, I work in a auto part store and I sell front wheel cv shaft all most every hour of the day.
jbb...i capice..i meant "junk"..cause the zetecs and contour/mys 2.5s do not seem "rebuildable"..Ford just replaces entire engines in contours/mystiques instead of re-boring, decking, etc. Is it true that there is min cyl wall clearances, etc?
how many recalls so far?..4?..before they get to the customer...our 99 contour had it's rad replaced and w/s gasket so far,,,by 19k miles...the contour.org mb has so many with engines replaced and MANY BAD water pumps....seems that the 2.0 and 2.5's (SVO's incl) have w/p problems..non met impellers disintegrate..then the overheating does it..others have oil circ probs cause of the lack of windage trys in the pan..esp during hard right turns. many rods are going south
escape=DEATH TRAP
explorer=ROLL OVER DOGGY

Profanity Removedare all you guys doing in the Escape room if all you want is overweight, ineffecient road-hogs? Finally Ford got something right with the Escape. It's too bad all you petrol heads can't see it.
SUV's Roll cause of stupid drivers. They're not sports cars. Don't dodge roadkill to end up in a ditch complaining your SUV rolled over. There was a study done with an Explorer and a special tire that they could deflate in 2 sec and they tested it at 10MPH - 70MPH and never once did the Explorer even start to swerve or lose control. It's the drivers that get blowouts and panic and roll their SUV.
In response to a number of comments here, I would like to state my own perfect, unerringly correct opinions;
1)They still make the Bronco, they just call
it an Expedition
2) I prefer a fullsize truck myself, but after driving an Escape with my wife, I would definitely consider one for her when her current Explorer gets on a little more in life. They are lower setting overall, but have about the same ground clearance, they're unibody, but feel very solid, and for road running, which is what 99.9% of these will see, they seem like a nice compromise (and still have a little extra pull in these Michigan winters).
3) Having rolled a BroncoII myself, I can say that these vehicles do roll very easily in a front corner drop situation. I simply slid down a hill in freezing rain, and waited for the curve ahead to see what would happen next. It rolled, I hurt. Any vehicle that has a high center of gravity, and especially combined with a short wheelbase is going to be less stable in off camber situations.To say it is always the fault of some litigation prone inexperienced driver, or that it is the fault of the infamous evil SUV is finger pointing lawyerese. I think my bronco rolled too easily,... I was stupid to head out to work in that mess. Would I have rolled in a full size truck, or an Escape? Who knows, I'd have slid down the hill and gone for a ride in anything without chains or studs. If you drive any SUV you need to know it's limits and abilities
JB: The engines in the Escape are the "new" Zetec" Engines. The base model comes with a 2.0 L double OH Cam, 16 Valve, 130hp engine. The upgrade is to the 3.oL, double OH Cam, 24 Valve, 201hp engine. Neither engine has ever been installed in a Contour or Taurus. I have a Focus with the 2.0L with a Supercharger on it, runs quite nicely. My new Escape has the 3.0 in it. We just returned from a 1000 mile trip. The truck had 16 miles on it when we left. 4 Adults and luggage, 80 mph on cruise, 23.8 mpg, of course it is chipped! I am thrilled with it. I traded in an Expedition and the ride is not much different, it was a very pleasant surprised. So to those that want the old gas guzzling Bronco back, there is a better way. By the way, mine is the 4wd Escape. Took it offroad in west Texas clay after the rains this weekend. The Escape performed flawlessly. AWD works great, then switch to 4 wheel lock for those really bad situations.
