First off what kind of mpg are you V-8 guys getting in your rangers?? I had a crazy thought of getting a 1st gen ext cab 4x4 and cramming in a 4.9 with a T-18 ,transfer case. Reason for this thought is the pure torque of the 300.
ive often thought of that myself, but you may have to strech out the nose to do it, dont think there is enough room betwwen the firewall and radeator bulkhead for the 300 to fit. and then there is the weight issue. thats quite a heavy motor, dont know if 3/4 ton coils will fit the spring seats or not. the 300 is a awesome engine, if it will fit be sure to beef up the rest of the drivetrain, if you dont slip a tire you are bound to twist a shaft in 2 somewhere. Dave.
If I did this I would cut the fire wall and make new sheet metal. suspension I have no clue, but, as for drive lines I would use from full size and have them cut down to fit. Motor mounts would be another issue to over come.
Search the forum, someone had a post to a site where a guy was doing the swap. It was really ugly with the engine well inside cab and a BUNCH of firewall reworking.
Dave
try the search button at "engine swaps" i was reading somewhere a long time ago someone put the 300 in a aerostar, dont know if it was here or another site though.
If you want an easier swap for the Ranger, go 302. That engine isn't exactly overwhelmed by the Ranger and will have plenty of torque to move it along. Even a 351, for that matter.
The 300 is a good pulling engine, but exactly what kind of pulling is a Ranger good for???
Someone also did a 300 a Ranger swap at trs, but he ended up junking the Ranger...a perfectly good one what he couldn't get smogged either. The swap was deemed "I wouldn't torture my worst enemy what that!" kind of work...all to junk it.
Swapping a straight six into a Ranger engine compartment sounds like a real bad deal. That engine will be about twice as long as a V6. If you're running a manual tranny, just imagine where the shifter will be. And the list will just go on and on. Why not consider a V8, especially one with EFI?
Be aware that where we live, you will need to make it pass emissions. This applies to whatever engine you drop in. When emission systems are dismantled/tampered with, state law requires that the owner spend unlimited dollars to make it pass (just call ecology and see what they have to say; I've been down the road this fall). Yeah, I suppose you could also register it at another zip code or in another county. Whoops, did I just say that, LOL! Shame on me. Nonetheless, if it doesn't pass and you do what I just said, remember that when you sell it smart buyers will also know about this. If they don't, expect a snotty phone call from the buyer when he tries to run it through emissions. Because of this, an EFI V8 will start to look pretty good. The emission systems should be much easier to deal with than carburetor or ECM assisted carburetor engines.
