In the "ladyfire" thread we proposed the idea of cutting the TCC wire and splicing in a switch as a diagnostic aid. That reader reported it worked well to prove the problem was TC shudder. You can read that thread here:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...=e4od+shudder+

If I were towing and the truck were shuddering away merrily, I'd kick off the O/D and see if the shuddering went away. Note that 3rd vs. 4th gear is an entirely different function than TC lock vs TC unlock. The trans will run in 3rd and 4th, with the torque converter either locked or unlocked in either gear. Usually, you won't feel shudder in 3rd gear with the torque converter locked, because the gearing is lower and the trans does not have to transmit as much torque (so the torque converter clutch does not slip).

A lot of guys say "never tow in O/D". Other guys say: it's OK to tow in O/D, providing the trans does not "hunt" back and forth between 3rd and O/D. If it keeps shifting back and forth, due to road load or whatever, turn off the O/D.

Disabling torque converter lock function with your snippers could overheat the tranny, due to energy losses in the torque converter. Towing in 3rd gear will not overheat the tranny -- the computer will still lock the torque converter despite selecting 3rd vs. 4th.

You can drain the fluid from the torque converter by removing the inspection plate in the bell housing and rotating the engine until the converter drain plug is visible. You get two or three more quarts out than just removing the pan. Do NOT start the engine unless the trans is full of fluid, turn the engine over with a wrench.

I dunno about the fluids or additives. A plain fluid change to Mercon III helped me for a while, but the shudder is back now. Some posters have good things to say about some of the products. Do a yahoo search on "torque converter shudder".

I believe the 4R70W is just the next generation E4OD.

Torque converter shudder is a malady affecting many modern-day transmissions, not just Fords. That's why there is such a proliferation of "anti shudder" fluids, additives, etc.

Sorry to keep bothering you , this is what I done today....
I dropped the pan and changed filter and fluid with Mercron V. The shudder does seem better but I can barely feel it , before it was severe. It only took about 4.5 quarts to refill and considering my manual says there is 12 courts plus what is in the cooler this is only at best 33% of new oil. Before I changed the fluid if I touched the brake while shuddering at about 45mph therefore unlocking converter it seemed to make the shudder leave.... Whats Next??
