Ok, I've eliminated the Bad Fuel scenario.
Here is where we are. 04 F350 6.0L psd cc lb. Fx4x4 Lariet 4000 miles.
This is the first major problem. 05/04 build date. not sure on the engine.
I have spent all morning now searching through the "Tech" files, and using the search option, and have come up with a couple of reasons for what is going on.
Here is what is happening. All is running fine, let off the throttle, (say going down a hill) nothing noticeable, apply more throttle to maintain speed on the other side, and nothing happens. spits, sputters(basicly it diesesl like a gasser out of time) then blows smoke, and takes off running fine. Then the stop light or sign, same thing. Barely running, spit, spudde, poof of smoke, and off to the races. Next stop sign. nothing happens, all is fine. 20 minutes later the world disappears behind you in a big cloud of smoke.
I was thinking that it would be a cam sensor, because it seem to load up on fuel. Seeming to be too far advanced, or retarded, But I can't seem to find this information in the forum search. I did find the info on the EBP sensor in the tech file. I'll take that info with me to the dealer. I'll also have them check the EGR valve. So,
What do you all think I have?
Am I on the right track?
Or is there something else that I'm missing?
Now.. What is it about this that makes me, (me is a green horn to diesel ownership), want to think this is an EGR valve issue?
If it was a cam sensor, then I wouldn't think that it'd run fine down the road at any time. As for the EBP. I don't have an oppinion on that. But, I'll have to throw out that there could be an injector issue? Fuel pump?

Well Steve, I'm on the other side of the state here,
I will be going to Empire Ford, Downtown.
So far they have treated me very well in all departments.
I get to your side of the state in the summer. I wonder if we should ask the webmaster for a forum for dealership listings and rate them if we've had good/bad service from them. -didn't want to get away from your post. Just a thought as I was responding to this. Let us know how Empire does and what the problem is.
I'd be currious if there's a computer fault code registered when they check. Does your check engine light come on while the engine is acting erratic?
No check engine light or anything on the dash.
I have about 2500 miles on this oil change. 13.5 quarts.
I thought about that, and thought that maybe it might be making oil.
That is what happens in the big ones when they loose a seal in the pump.
Still 1/2 way between the add and full marks.
Good thought though.
Same issue as i had on my 03. It ended up being the EGR valve. The dealer replaced the valve and it ran fine ever since.; Didnt get a chance to try unplugging it cause i didnt use this forum back then. I bet if you did unplug it while you r truck is shut off, the problem goes away.
Went over to the dealer today at lunch.
It was perfect, pulled into the service area with the thing all loaded up and barely running. Nursed it back to health with the smoke a bellowing.
My service adviser seems to be pretty sharp, and knowledgeable.
First think he said was, looks like we have an EGR problem.
I asked him about cam and crank sensors, and a EBP sensor.
He said that it was probably not a cam or crank sensor with this problem, but they have been having problems with the EBP and EGR sensors, and that is where they will start. Then the typical answer, " we will know more when we get into it"
Couldn't get it in today, did offer me a ride home because their loaners are out till next week. Got an appt. for tomorrow morning.
Updates to follow.
rearview, when your truck is "coughin & smokin" is it black smoke or bluish white? I hace an '04 6.0 and it seems to be doing the same thing. The smoke is blue and white. Like you said it is unpredictable. Had it to the dealer 3 previos times for this problem and is currently in shop again. Have had 2 air to air hoses installeld and an EGR in hte previous visits. Haven't fixed the problem yet. Was only occurring in tow/haul and now is occurring in drive. Also had another EGR put that I forgot to mention before I noticed this problem. It was installed when I had to have the turbo replaced at 14,000 miles. I now have 18,700. Please let me know what you find out.
Darren,
I also had an '03 6.0. I had a fuel cell go bad in it the day after I bought it. When I tried to accelerate there was a hesitation for 5-10 seconds. Then the turbo would kick in and there would be a cloud of black smoke thick enough stop traffic. After it cleared ou everything was fine. Fuel cell was replaced and never had another problem.
Ok,,, Well Gentlemen,
Interesting enough, they are saying to watch my excessive idle time.
The thing is pluged in when it gets about 35 deg. Start it up and idle 3 to 4 minutes in the morning, and maybe 2 to 3 in the evening before the drive home.
Back in September I had a piece of equipment broke down out in the field, I had three trucks out there with their lights on idleing so we could see. (Harvest you know.)
After it is warmed up, drive it like I stole it. Well,,, 1/2 the time.
And the answer is ------------ drum roll please -----------------
The infamous -- EGR valve -- Wahoooooo. !! imagine that.
Here again!
Thanks FTE
