Soundsystem Question...

I have just purchased an 05 Regular Cab STX and have a few questions for upgrading my stereo. I have the in-dash 6 cd changer with MP3 capability. I just bought a pair of pioneer ts-a6870r 6x8 3-way speakers to replace the back two stock speakers because I had a gift card to best buy. I have a sony Xplod head unit I pulled from my 98 gmc sierra. It is the cdx-mp30 unit. I am planning on installing a set of components to replace the stock front speakers.
My ?'s...

Is this stock HU the audiophile unit?
Is the Sony a better unit for sound and performance than what came stock?
What components are you guys using and what other suggestions do you guys have for my upgrades?

Thanks in advance for your help, this site has been a blessing since purchasing my first Ford pickup.

Hi Pylda, I will take a whack at your questions but I am no expert.

1) Someone else can probably verify, but unless you have ordered the Audiophile or it came equipped with it you do not have it. The head unit might be the same, but the amp, sub etc will not be there. Ford has always used the same headunit it a great deal of applications.

2) Your Sony head unit, assuming its new and in good condition will almost invariably provide a cleaner signal to your speakers than a factory unit. Granted, the stuff from the assembly line has improved by huge amounts over the years but so has the aftermarket units. The clearer the signal from your head unit or amplifier coupled with your new more sensative and better sounding speakers will be noticeable.

3) I have yet to mod my stereo because I want to hit the performance and basics outside the truck first. However, should I get to that point I would like to replace the stock front speakers with some nice infinity coax 6x8's, a custom sub box to fit under the back seat (I have a s'crew) and a nice powerful 4 channel amp to drive the fronts and the sub. The rear coax's will probably be left alone since they really only support the fronts a little and will run off the head unit. Hopefully your head unit already has a "sub out" pre-amp so you will not need a cross over.

Good luck..

T
