Look for an aluminum cased SROD in the pull it yards. Three spped with fourth as overdrive. I regulary get them for under 50 bucks here in PA. Need to look but there out there.
Just placed one behing a 300 six in my sons 62 F250... Has 4.56 rear gears in the dana so it needed some help.

Here in Connecticut when i was looking the cheapest I found was in a bone yard for $200 for a SROD ts170 external linkage to replace my SROD ts170fs internal linkage. I got lucky my ex's girlfriens father had one outa a 78 van. He gave it to me for free.
