I am just wondering if there is anything I need to know before I dive into this tomorrow morning. I know I have to remove the driveshafts, crossmembers, and slide the trans/transfer case back to remove it but I wanted to know if there are any quirks I need to know about.

Welcome Stagman! its pretty straight forward, just a big mess job. Just fill up your new converter with trans fluid befor installing it. You changing to a higher stall?
I am getting a flashing O/D light and the Dealership Diagnostic says it is losing pressure after a little driving. Check the post by travisesty on the flashing O/D light and that is my exact problem. The codes they pulled said transmission slippage but the mechanic says he would replace the converter first. Since the dealer charges $70 per hour to remove and reinstall the trans whether they find something or not I will bite the bullet and replace it myself. It is $180 for a remanufactured one from NAPA so that is the route I am going first. Hopefully it will fix it.
No you don't need to drop the pan, but I would do so. matter of fact i would do that first to see if there is any signs of trouble, install a new filter while I was at it.
I did that about 2 months ago when the light first came on. There was a little goo on the magnet from the clutches but no metal and the fluid was still in good shape. I am pretty sure the fluid was the original. I am almost certain that the trans is in good shape. Everything looked clean.
