transmission service

I have an early 99 F250 super duty 4x4 with 108k on it. I have had the trans. flushed twice before without removing the pan. I am taking it wed. to have the trans. serviced. After reading the threads here I think the trans. is the weakest part of this truck. I would like to have the pan pulled this time to change the filter and also thinking about putting an auxilliary cooler on it to cut down on the heat. I think I have the 4r100 trans. Can I switch to synthetic fluid this time or stay with regular? I enjoy this forum and thank you for your responses.

You do have a 4R100. You can switch to synthetic as long as you get a MERCON synthetic. Don't use a fluid that says MERCON V, or meets both MERCON and MERCON V. Your owner's manual says that you could have serious transmission damage if you use MERCON V. I use Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. It is MERCON rated, but not MERCON V.

I have to wonder were the Weak 4R100 tranny BS comes from!! I have 190,200 miles on mine and I have never had a single problem with it!! I didn't change the Fluid until 141,000 miles and only checked it 4 times durring that period!! I did switch to Mobil 1 Syn. at that time and I haven't checked it sense!!

Get a bigger heavier trailer, then get stupid and try pulling that block over mountanious hills at 75+mph, that'll probably start some of the "week 4r100 tranny BS"

It all boils down to how each individual drives.

Over the last 6,500 miles I've put over 2,000 on mobey pulling my 8x18x9'6" high 10,000# trailer!! Mobey knows it's back there!! Don't have any mountains to deal with but I do drive like hell!! Still never had a single problem!!

is the additional tranny cooler a good idea to lower temps?
