Well after putting a whopping 28,000 miles on my 2003 EB Expedition it needs front brakes.
Looks like there is some wear on the rotors, but I couldn’t find any numbers stamped on the rotors showing what minimum thickness may be for them (always like to double check).
I will be doing mine this comin week. I am not expecting any surprises and should be like doing any other brake job. I have 30k on them and prolly need brakes but they have been squealing for the last 10k (not the indicators) and thats the main reason I am doing them, plus to go to ceramic to get rid of the dust.
Jack truck up, remove tire, remove caliper, remove caliper mounting braket, remove rotors. Install is reverse. I will also be purging most of the fluid and replacing it with synthetic.
Found two Allen bolts for pulling the calipers under some plastic covers I believe, sound correct to you?
Make sure on the synthetic to use something that is compatible with conventional fluids or your going to have some fun issues down the road. I made the full synthetic mistake on a Corvette in my younger days; cost me a fortune to fix all the damage. In my current race car I run the Valvoline Syntec brake fluid it has a nice high dry boiling point and it's 100% compatable with conventional brake fluid.
BTW. I couldn’t get the front rotors to budge on my 2WD Expy beat em pretty good with a dead blow hammer and nothing moved.

I live in Miami and my 03 navi had its brakes replaced at 19000 miles at the dealer under warranty and they left marks on the rotors. Like they hit them with something.

Must be nice to have a reputable dealer in your area, heck I can bring print outs of TSB's for this thing and show the service writer the problem and they still can't fix it…

I would have expected better life out of the rotors! 28,000 miles and they are visibly worn in there is a groove on the rotor where the pads don't ride...
I live in Ft. Worth, Texas heck it hardly even rains here, anyone taken a set of rotors off of one of these things yet??
My 2000 Expedition was still on it's original pads and rotors when I turned it in at 36,000 miles, this new one doesn't seem to have as much "Ford Tough" in it as the last one....

Just finished replacing the pads! Never did figure out how to get the rotors off finally gave up since I didn’t want to break anything. I roughed up the rotors with some 80 grit sandpaper, and thankfully didn't have any deep grooves in the rotors!
Took it for a test drive and all is quite!
BTW. To remove the calipers you need a 7mm Allen wrench.
Try PB Blaster on the rotors. Spray on & let soak, then repeat. I've had to replace the rotors on my 03 EB @ 34K for squeaking & horrific brake dust. Had truck in South Florida before moving to Dallas & rotors were too thin to turn. Replaced with Power Slots.
Replaced the front brakes and rotors on my 03 expy yesterday. Had to spray break away on the rotors and let sit, then hit several times with a hammer (turning rotor after each hit). My bother is a mechanic and recommended the top of the line wagner brakes and wagner rotors (cost $216.00, pads $57.00 and rotors $73.00 each), I asked about the ceramics and was told that the expy uses much more aggressive pads than the ceramic and brakeing could be affected. You will also need some break away (or PB blaster) on the bolts that hold on the caliper bracket to remove the rotors for turning or replacement. Does anyone know the specs for how much can be removed from the rotors? (mine were grooved about 1/8th inch on either side)
LC - The specs should be stamped into the rotor. I think your brother is right to recomend the new rotors, the 03's are really hard on brakes & going all new is just good insurance. After 34K I had to replace the fronts but was able to turn the rears.
