Help! Clunk in front Right Axle
---1989 F250, 4x4, of course

a new noise started, a clunk-clunk-clunk, rotating noise.
No noise if the hubs are unlocked, only when hubs are locked, and it
doesn't matter if 4x4 is engaged or not.
The new u-joint seemed tight. Also new spindle bearing installed.
Spindle and lugnuts are tight.
The Haynes manual said something about the axle splines being "keyed and can only be installed with the key splines aligned."
Well, I just put it back together, no key aligning.
Should the right axle be aligned, and could that be the cause of the clunk?
