I have searched the forum for info on this but have found nothing...I just bought an '89 B2 4x4 auto trans and inside the cab there is a box with a red button on it that is hanging on the passengers side. I know it is an emergency shutoff switch but I can not tell if it is working correctly...it does shut off when i shake it a little bit but I dont know if it should take more than a little shake for it to shut off the engine...Is there a way to test it?, Can I replace it?, What it the proper name for it, so I know what to ask for if it needs to be replaced?...I dont want to have to keep reseting it when the truck shuts off on me while I am driving. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I hope everyone had a nice holiday. Thanks Again.
Sounds like the impact switch that shuts off the fuel pump if the vehicle is impacted in an accident. It should shut off the fuel pump if you hit it. If it is hanging by the harness I would expect that it would trip as you are driving since it will be smacking around. Just remount it as it sounds like it is working.

that switch is called the inertia switch which cuts off fuel into engine it's mounted next to the transmission hump on the passenger side. usually get loose bounces around cuts in and out just mount it back on .
