Hi everyone,
My passenger's side lower ball joint has, yet again, decided to go. Today I was driving home and I heard it sweeking over every bump and every time I turn the wheel. I got under the truck and there is a nice cut in the boot. I know this side is going to be a bitch to come apart. How do you guys recommend freeing the steering knuckle from the ball joint? Ford says to use a pitman arm puller but I can't ever get it too fit the control arm. Any help is greatly appreciated. I would like to take a couple hours and replace it in the morning.
Thanks,
-Phil
It's tapered like a tie rod end. All I have used in breaking tapers loose on tie rod ends, ball joints is about a five lb. hammer, striking the side of the bored reciever(steering
arm/spindle. If you can get a couple of good blows to them they come apart. I've used
this method on heavy stuff, ball joints on 5000 lb P chassis frt ends etc.
Thanks... I can't understand why the driver's side is original and the passenger's side goes once a year. I replaced it last November then all of a sudden its making noise again.
Oh well, a project to keep me busy.
Thanks so much,
-Phil
I only buy Ford parts, especially something as important as the load bearing ball joint. Don't want my truck to loose a ball joint like Dodge is having with the Dakota. LOL
Thanks,
