2002 Ranger ABS problem

2002 Ranger 4x4 edge, recently i have noticed that when the brakes are applied the abs system is kicking in when just before the veh comes to a stop. this happens no matter what the road surface is(even on bare dry roads).any suggestion on what the problem could be? no accidents, no repair work on brakes prior to this mileage is 33,000 thanks

Welcome to FTE!!

I would start by going to a local parts store that will pull the codes for free and checking the condition of the brakes.

This sounds similar to the problem I just posted. My mechanic ran a diagnostic and said no codes were showing up that anything is wrong with abs.

Hi - I am having a similar problem with 1999 Ranger w/ 4 wheel ABS. ABS starts to activate when you have slowed down to less than 5 mph, even on dry roads. I have checked for codes and found none. Did you find a solution to your problem? Thanks.

Welcome to FTE!!!

I recall someone else having a problem like this and it was a damaged front wheel sensor.

Ranger ABS

I took my Ranger to the local Ford dealership for ABS activating at slow speeds while turning. Problem was something with ABS sensor that doesn't show up during diagnostic, $450. Later they found problem with 4x4 hub (after they fixed ABS sensor, 4x4 wouldn't work, never had problem with 4x4 before). Replaced 4x4 hub vacuum seals, $275. Front brakes are still wearing faster than usual because back brake self-adjusters don't work properly (had them replaced for $150). 8,000 miles later the front brakes are wearing out. I really think that Ranger brakes are just pieces of crap. Good luck.

I like Kens idea for a no cost computer scan at your favorite autoparts store. Maybe it'll provide a pinpoint clue.

I've read of three problems like this, one was as has been suggested, a damaged wheel brake sensor.

Another was dirt or iron filings on the sensors.

Another was a bad speed sensor, atop the rear pumpkin. Do you have any problems with the speedo acting up or maybe the cruise control dropping out????

If so, suspect the speed sensor, as it feeds into the ABS system & is a common point of problems.

Thanks for the ideas.
I haven't had any proglems with the speedo or cruise. Checks with my code reader showed no codes - I'll try to check for dirt or iron filings.

If the other checks don't turn up anything
don't dismiss the speed sensor YET.

I've had problems with my 94 Taurus speed sensor, but it wasn't throwing any codes either.

I couldn't easily get to it for electrical tests, so I had to hook up my Actron CP9145 scan tool & have some one drive the vehcle while I monitored the speed sensors output.

It had output, but I caught it's output voltage "hanging up" in several places & this was confusing the computer something awful.

Turned out the places it was acting up, were the places I was having problems.

So it turned out there was no way a static test was going to find anything in my case.

The only way to have known or sure, was if I just threw a new speed sensor at the problem & hoped I'd guesed right & I don't like throwing parts at problems!!!

So just reading the speed sensors static resistance, may give ok NON operational readings, but it's OPERATIONALl dynamic output, may be messed up just enough to confuse things.

So I'd suggest using a scan tool that can monitor PID's & make sure it's ok with the vehicle in motion, before dismissing it as a suspect!!!!

I had a similar problem. Replace my front hub and the problem stopped!

I finally unplugged one of the front wheel speed sensors. This disabled the ABS. The 'ABS' light on the dash comes on, but at least the truck stops when it's supposed to. I'm assuming there is rust inside the hub. I'll deal with it and get the ABS working again when I have to replace front pads / turn rotor.

Just wanted to leave some info. I just replaced the Front right 4x4 hub bought the part through auto zone for about $250, and it came with the ABS sensor. I found through talking to a couple of mechanics and looking at the wore part that when the bearings go, the heat and debris usually takes out th sensor. As for brakes, I replaced my pads and shoes at 25k and had the rotors turned. I put ceramics all the way around and they are still in good shape at 80k. Any way just wanted to let people know what I found.
