Shift Lever

I have 96' XL I put a 3" body lift on. I need to put the extension on the shift lever but I can't seem to get it off. The Chiltons manual says to loosen the bolt that holds it on and pull it up. One problem.... There is no bolt. It is a threaded stud with a nut on one side. When I loosen the nut nothing happens. Any one ever taken one of these off? Any help or suggestions would be gladly appreciated.

The lever you want to remove,is it for the auto or manual trans or the tranfer case?

Well, I managed to get the manual trans lever off It was not as hard as I thought. Any suggestions on how to remove the one for the transfer case?
