My wife informed me that her "00 Explorer has a blinking "theft" light and I don't know where to start to diagnose the problem. No problems ocking/unlocking the door or starting, any suggestions
Is this blinking light a phoney deterrent or is there a real anti-theft device installed?
We bought a 2004 Explorer and no one could answer this @ dealership.
I'd like ot know becasue we had the VIN# etched into the glass and submitted to insurance guy but could not elaborate on the blinking light.
The light on top of the dash will blink until the ignition is turned on I believe. Your key has a chip in it. If you have a key made and it doesn't have the chip your car won't start. At least that is what they told me about the blinking light on our 04 xplorer.
Is the light misbehaving (i.e. blinking once the doors are unlocked or the iginition is on)? If it's just when the truck is locked up then it is the security system being active (if equiped with one):
Theft indicator
The theft indicator on the instrument cluster will operate as follows:
- When the ignition is OFF, the theft indicator will flash briefly every
two seconds to indicate the SecuriLocky system is protecting your
vehicle.
- When the ignition is turned to ON or START, the theft indicator will
light for three seconds and then go out. If the theft indicator stays on
for an extended period of time or flashes rapidly, have the system
serviced by your dealership or a qualified technician.
I am guessing that the light is blinking all the time so there is something wrong (and that is why you posted here for help). Hopefully someone that has been through this or that has a wiring diagram can lend a hand.

Hey RJB1- thanks for the confirmation. Went to dealer to get another key made and he explained it the same way.
Oh yeah about 90 bucks for the new key & remote but peace of mind that we have two sets.
With that info went to insurance rep. and amended the security discount form with the anti-theft info.
Hope to get a few bucks dicount w/ this and the windows etched w/ VIN number.

OUCH, If you only had one key, then the dealer is about your only option. If you have two working keys, you can get a PATS key on EBay (Remotes too) for around $15, and get the key cut locally (had mine done at Walmart). With Two working keys, you can program your vehicle to another key (at least up to four total keys) using your vehicles computer and a series of steps turning keys one and off and watching the anti-theft light. I got two keys and two remotes for my '03 for less than $40 delivered to my house.
