black smoke

i have a 1988 ford ranger, that when i accelerate black smoke comes out the tail pipe. the plugs are also black but not oily. it starts good and idles good. this a 2.9 engine. ive been told air mask-trottle body-ox snesors, i thought some one could give me short cut.

First,verify the vacuum line going to the MAP sensor is hooked and not leaking,etc. You can also unplug the electrical conn. on the MAP and restart the engine to see if the problem clears up.If it does, you have a bad MAP sensor.It could also be the coolant temp. sensor (not sender).

well i have renewed the timing chain-cool sensor-throttle sensor-plugs,sent it to a shop and had timing set and had all te gadgets checked that you could. the truck drove good for about two weeks. decided to go to florida,drove about 150 miles and it started acting up again.it cost about $80.00 to drive 800 miles. it would clear up from time to time and run smooth. now it just misses and the black smoke does not come out. the next thing i am going to do is pull the distrib out and rebuild it. new wirs and plugs also. what makes this truck change so much from one thing to another

You didn't mention any thing about the MAP yet ? Could still be your problem !
