Please if any one can help, my always faithful 92 explorer will not engage in 4x4 mode, the light does not come on when the button is pushed. We just got 10 in. of snow and we cant get out. Please help.
My '93 had a problem last year. I had to put it in 4X4 low first to get it to engage, then once it was in low I would hit high to switch it. I think the 4X4 electronic control module may be in the drivers side rear wheel well. Remove the jack cover and look into the compartment above the wheel well. Check to see if there is a reset button on the control module.
It seems that most of the time this is due to a dirty shift motor. Usually just needs to be dissassembled and cleaned.
A couple of thing you can do in a pinch:
1) Get a small hammer, wrench, screwdriver, or other tapping device. Climb under the truck and tap (don't tap too hard) on the shift motor while someone else pushes the button. Sometimes this will jar the motor loose and get it to shift for you.
2) The t-case can be manually shifted by removing the shift motor, grabbing the shaft with a pair of pliers, and turning it to the desired position.
The dirty contacts and worn shift motor actuator are a common problem with the 91-94 Explorers. Here's a link for a more permanent fix of the motor...make sure to read the entire page before doing any work:
