I am from the great state of New Jersey. Does anybody know if the towing vehicle has to be registered for the combined weight of the vehicle and the trailer? I asked when I renewed my registration last time and the women behind the counter all had different answers. It seems logical, but then why have a weight rating on the trailer registration too? Thanks for any info you can give.
You're going to get a lot of different answers on this based on each person's state.
Let me be the first, In SC we register by weight if the empty weight is over 7,000# or the gross is over 9,000#.
If the gross combined weight is over 9,000# then the tow vehicle must register for the maximum combined weight that may be carried.
By definition my F-350 is able to run a passenger tag because it has an ew less than 7,000# and a gross weight of less than 9,000#. While towing my 5th wheel however, the gross combined weight is 23,000#, therefore I have a 24,000# tag.
Also note that we state what the gross weight that we want to register the vehicle. It makes no difference to the DMV what the manufacturer lists as the Gross. All the DMV cares about is money.
Same for Fl. , but when we lived in Mi. we registered the truck with the manf. weight . So you should check your state's DMV . and not "the ladies behind the counter" , see if you can get hold of someone who knows the law .
In Rhode island the registration list the gross weight of the veichal, they don't even bother asking, for a combined weight. i.e. a f-350 can be registrated has a combination veichal and it doesn't mate how much it tows, I combination plate is one that also a truck to be registred has a passanger veichal
