Talking It's Broke?

I have a 95 F-350 PSD working on the second tranny now. The issue I am having is cold starts I cannot get the truck to start with out a lil shot of starting fluid. I keep it pluged in and still have issues. I usally cycle the Glow plugs 3 to 5 times and still nothing. I am thinking about replacing the glow plugs after the thaw here in VA or when my fingers get feeling again. I also have felt under the oil pan and its not warm either I recently replaced the plug end of the block heater and still nothing. So what should the next steps be any help would be appreciated and BTW this is my first post. SO Hello all !

Hello yourself.

You need glowplugs and/or a glowplug relay.

The block heater is a coolant heater, not oil. If you leave it plugged in all night, does the temp gauge register in the a.m.?

Using ether on a glow plug engine is begging to get your eyebrows singed...luckily they don't seem to be working.

Ether BAD!!! Replace the glow plug relay first and see if that helps. The relay is cheaper and easier then doing the plugs. Are you getting any smoke when you crank the motor over before spraying it?

replaced relay

Thanks Cookie for your reply

I just last winter replaced the GP relay with one from International. When I go to start the truck it has no issues clicking off and on when I checked it with my test light it lights up I have an extra one in my tool box I can replace it with to see if maybe it is broken before I pull the valve covers to do the glow plugs. If I do have to replace the GP's is there a gasket set that I need to get for the valve covers or are they reuseable rubber ones? Just need to figure out a plan and go with it here soon. I will remember the eye brow thing in the future though

Thanks again looking foward to your replies.

Yes I am getting white smoke the longer I crank on it then after it starts no smoke then runs really good although it is kinda sluggish till i floor it and get things going. On take off its like the oil is really heavy or something. I still run the rotella year round havent made the switch to the light stuff for winter not sure if I need to. Guess I am just used to servicing my old road tractor.

If you must spray a glow plug engine, crank it over after the wait to start light goes out a couple of times if it doesn't fire at all then without turning the key to the off position spray your ether and start cranking again that way if any of the plugs are still working they won't be hot when the ether hits the cyl. Still not a great idea but atleast it's safer that way.

Thanks Thats how I do it nice to have back up on this would really hate to set my *** on fire right here at the holidays and all

funny thing is when i spray it i use so little its like almost non sometimes i think i just use the air in the can and not any of the fluid. And it fires right up. I thinks its the little gremlins that want me to get back out in the cold open the hood just to have to do it to make it start.

The tappet pan gaskets are reuseable.

Ya took the words right out of my mouth ! I had the same problem with a 6.9 .....Turned out the batteries were not strong enough to start a cold engine , but other wise seemed good . I replaced the batteries and it started every time .
