I'm having an exhaust leak problem with my stock FE-390, w/stock exhaust manifolds. I replaced the passenger side gasket and within a day it started leaking again, even after retorqueing. So, after re-cleaning the surfaces, I replaced it, again. It ran quiet for nearly a week then started leaking again.
When I bought the gaskets, (Felpro) the part description said something about "old-style heat shields".
I'm running without heat shields and I'm beginning to wonder if the heat shield is supposed to be an integral part of the gasket combination ?
The gasket I'm currently using has a metalic side that faces the manifold and a non-metalic, smooth side that faces the head.
Does anyone know if I'm using the wrong gasket in this application ?

Steve, Heat shields are not necessary, I have a 74 F-250 witha 360 ford motor and I have the same problem that you do constantly. First check to see if your manifolds are not warped. This sounds like the main culprit of your problem. If true than I suggest running the truck through heat cycles retorquing the bolts several times over a period of a week or so. This should help for some time but the leaky gasket problem is common form what I hear I have used a few different brand of gaskets (felpro, Melon) and same thing. Oy ya, make sure you use alot of neverseize on those exhaust bolts.
Thanks, Chris.
I'm going to try a new set of gaskets tomorrow, with some spray seal.
Maybe that will help some. If not, I guess I'll just have to have the manifold planed.I'll check for warpage while I'm at it.
