I started doing a compression test on my 82 f-100, 302...i stopped after 2 cylinders because the compression tester is to hard to hold to the cylinder, doesnt thread in, so i'll just wait till school starts to take it in there. cylinder 5 and 6 had a compression of 120 and 118...just wondering what it should be around, and what it was stock. Still trying to decide if im going to rebuild it or not.
The rear main seal is leaking, and so is the timing chain cover, and the hose going into the air filters is spewing out oil. so im going to have to pull the motor anyway.
the hose going into the air filters is spewing out oil.
Make sure your PCV valve is working and has good vacuum pull. After that, run the engine till it warms up, and then pull the hose that goes to the aircleaner off while the engine is running. If it's puffing smoke out of this pipe, that is not a good sign. If it uses a lot of oil, that is another bad sign.
Your compression readings will be different depending on conditions. You need to make sure the battery is strong, and the carb is tied wide open. Watch the needle as each cylinder pumps up. It should only take about three compression strokes for the guage to peak. If it take more on some cylinders, then they are weak.
