I got a 96 f 150 302 auto. It got cool out last night and my truck barely started. I was thinking of getting a block heater for it and the only freeze plug I can see is the passenger side above the starter( I believe it to be 1 1/2 in size this sound right) . Is this the correct one for putting in the block heater and if so how hard is it to get the freeze plug out..
Other options I have seen are, heated Dipstic, heater hose circulating tank, One that splices in lower Radiator hose, a magnetic one for the oil pan, anyone know if any of these are better than a block heater and some are definately easier to install. Any help appreciated or any other options please let me know..
The freeze plug type are the best. Yes, the plug above the starter would be the best place to put it, that's where I put mine and it works just dandy. If I remember correct, the farther toward the rear of the block, the better. Probably worth it to remove the starter just for the extra room to install it.
As far as size, I couldn't tell you how big it is. When I bought mine, I went to NAPA and told them what motor I had and they gave me one that fit.
The freeze plugs can be a pain some times. The can rust in. I had about as big of hammer as I could fit in the area and a bigger punch and knocked that baby right outta there. Don't worry about saving the plug, they're not usable once you've knocked them out.
