Leaky Timing Cover
My 86 F150, 4.9L, straight 6, leaks oil from behind the harmonic balancer. I suspect that the timing cover oil seal on the balancer is blown. I have looked at repair manuals and parts on-line and would appreciate help:
1) I know I need a harmonic balancer puller but the Haynes manual says I need an installer tool. Can I just use the main bolt to push the balancer back on ?
2) The Haynes manual says I need an alignment tool to center the timing cover on the new seal. Is this necessary or can I center by feel ?
3) The parts kits include a harmonic balancer repair sleeve. What the heck is that ?
4) The parts kit includes an oil seal and a round gasket. I was expecting only one seal between the timing cover and the balancer. What is the round gasket for ?
5) How do the timing marks stay in the right place ? The balancer is keyed to the crank but how does the timing cover (with marks) get mounted in the right place on the block ?
