My 88 Ranger is giving me fits. The truck has 84k miles,2.0l I4 with a carb, 5sp stick. The truck is getting horrible gas mileage, it's pinging, and when I get up to highway speed(60-65) it will sometimes completely loose power and won't regain power untill I get down to about 35mph or it will die. It seems to run fine after it dies though.
It now has a ner fuel pump, cap and rotor, the plugs and wires are realtively new(about 1yr old),fule filter is fine, timing is right on, exhaust system checks out ok too. I don't have a clue what could be wrong with this thing. Any help would be great.
Thanks, Will.
Don't know about yours, mine is an 83 2.0 with single barrel carb. Had this problem some time back, try the O2 sensor, should be in the exhaust near the manifold. If this does not get it and you have a wire harness around the drivers side of the carb toward the front with the wires going to a barrel shaped unit on the carb, pull the wires and see if this makes a difference. This has something to do with leaning out the mixture and got "stuck" on mine-would ping really bad. Of course check the obvious things such as float level, fuel pump output and evaporater charcoal can to make sure this isn't clogged and causing vacuum in the tank, this is noticed when you hear a hissing when removing the cap. This could cause the engine to run lean after a period of time due to the pump tryin' to suck against a vacuum(shut off releases the vacuum?). If I think of anything else reasonable, I'll post for Ya. Good luck, Chuck P.
