Custom Rear Window (Hatch Style)

Ok, maybe you all will think I'm crazy or right on track. I think it is safe to say the rear window design on the Bronco is not up to snuff. I've looked at the rear window hatch design, example: the rear window on the Explorer and many other vehicles. You know, the window that is hinged at the roof and is pushed up by those shock things. I've been thinking of putting a regular tailgate on a Bronco and some how making a window system similar to the one mentioned above. No more tracks or motors to worry about anymore and a shock would be easy to replace. Let me know what you all think.

sound like a good idea to me,i wonder what it would look like or how it would attach to the tailgate to keep the window closed and locked, if you figure it out let me know,i wish i had somthint like that on my 93 im tired of putting the key in rolling the window down, and then rolling it back up, i have to do this all the time becouse i work out of mine.

You have an interesting project. With a LOT of planning and Junk yard searching it is possible to find a rear window that will fit in to the fiberglass top opening. Keep in mind you will need to fabricate a glass ledge for the window to seat against along with a gasket including the tail gate. I'm not sure if you can have a custom rear window tempered at a glass company or not. if they do hold on to your shorts i'm sure it will cost a pretty penny. hinges and the latch mech. you may want to use the explorers setup, or possibly an electric lock with a remote.

Good luck and happy hunting

That would take a significant amount of creativity, fabrication and modification. While it would eliminate the headache of the window failing to rise, lower, or both, it would (in my opinion) be too much of a project to be worth it. But, it is your project, and if you succeed in it, god bless you!

If I was inclined to take on a project such as this, it would be to mount a windshield washer/wiper for the rear window. I cant stand it when it gets so dirty that I cant see out of it. This would, I believe, be a much easier project.

What sort of tailgate would you have in mind that would fit a bronco to accomodate a hatch window? Or would you work with your existing one?

Creativity yep, end result out of this world! When doing custom work/fabrication to have a ride no one else has and to make it look good, Thats the stuff people envy. After all if it was easy anyone could do it and it would be no big deal.

I just measured (and froze) my bronco window and my explorer window not even close in size. But the some contemplation maybe an international harvester truck windsheild (which is flat) could be cut down to size

I would use the bronco tail gate

I don't know if anyone on this board is aware of it, but that is (hatchback bronco) just how it was done on Mexican bronco's. I've seen them here in Texas. Apparently, this and other differences were done to lower the manufacturing cost. They also had a huge bronco emblem on the side where our XLT emblem is. These are just a couple of things I can remember off of the top of my head. I remember these being mid-to-late 80's models.

Burtoby,

That's exactly what I'm talking about and if something has been made for them then my quest will easily be fulfilled. I'm not sure where to start my research on the "Mexico" Bronco but maybe Ford will be a start.
