Dual Tank Crossfeed?????

I have started to notice that whenever I fill both of my tanks to the brim that there "seems" to be some transfer from one tank to the other. If I fill them both up, and then check the fuel level, the guage is pinned past "F" on both tanks. Now, let's say I run most of the fuel out of the front tank and now switch to the rear (or vice-versa) the fuel level is down from the pinned position, and sometimes even under the "F". This strange action makes me think there is a crossover between the tanks or something. Anybody know ??

Thanks

I had a 96 f-150 and it did the same thing. I would fill both tanks, run the front to E, switch to the rear, run it to E, then switch back to the front and it would be over 1/2 tank again. Don't know the cause for sure, but I think there was a valve in the line that went bad. I just dealt with it.

Pretty much what I've been doing....dealing with it! I've noticed that even if I fill just one tank up all the way but don't use it right away, by the time I finally do switch over to it, it reads below full. This also makes me doubt my fuel milage calculations, I never know if I'm just running off of one tank or not!

you have not told us what you are driving? ford had trouble with the switching valves on the frame rails on the ,96 models. we replaced many under warranty. the problem was the fuel returning from the engine was not going into the tank the fuel was being used from. you can run some test to confirm this...removed the lines from the tank not being used, run the engine and monitor the lines that were removed. if the engine dies after a short while, it is pulling from the disconeected lines ( will run out of fuel) or if you see fuel coming out of the return line, replace the valve. you will need to run this test on both tanks.

Thanks! That very well could be my problem.. I have a '97, but it has a build date of September '96. If this turns out to be the case, do I just need to replace the switching valve?
