hey all, I have heard alot of different things about trannys, I have 2001 4x4 Screw, I have put 22K on, it now has 63K, I don'n know the records on the truck, should I flush or drop the pan & replace filter too? have heard TOO MUCH from friends & mechanics ( not Ford mechanics) plus positive & negative past experiences of my own, thanx
I have a 99 4.2 with an auto tranny and I only do most of the time urban driving. Considering that mileage may not be a good indicator when to change the fluid, how many months (or years) should I need to replace it?
If the choice was flush vs. dropping the pan and replacing the filter, I'd choose the latter, even though it won't address the fluid in the torque converter. If you want to do both, that works for me.
BTW, the transmission dipstick will have the correct fluid recommendation. Don't use anything else, including those one-fluid-fits-all concoctions.
I believe the haynes manual says every 30k...i think thats a bit much though. at 40k i drained and dropped pan, and drained torque converter, put in new filter, and filled with mobil1, I could really tell the difference. moving the gear selector is smoother, it shifts smoother, runs better. im at 60k, so ive had the mobil 1 for about 20k, i recommend it.
I bought the truck @ 37K don't know if the tran fluid was changed or not, I know the oil was, you said Mobile 1, is this tranny fluid? I did not know Mobil made tranny fluid, but I really like Mobile 1, if that is the case, then that's what I think I will do
263,000 on original E4OD bolted in a '97 (early) 250HD with 7.5L. Have always towed it hard, owned it since new. First tranny flush was at around 120K or so. around 170K it developed hard shifts into 3 and OD with accompanying convertor shudder.I've already done the research, and when the original unit finally explodes, the Beast will receive a re-manufactured heavy duty unit from Road Master Transmissions, they beef up the E4OD the way Ford should have from the beginning. Also, Mobil 1 synthetic in my opinion is the way to go.
