Well I have this weird problem. I have a '97 Ranger 2wd, 2.3l, standard cab. The alternator is good and puts out the required volts and amps (tested off the vehicle), and the battery is still good, holding q charge and passing load testing. The problem is that the battery idiot light came on, and it started to run off the battery, draining it untill the truck died on the highway.
I can't figure iout what the problem is here. The alternator is good. The battery is good. But the battery light stays on and it keeps running off the battery, without the alternator taking charge and running things.
What could be the problem here? Fusible Link? Where can I find it? Anything else??
If it's got an external regulator, start there, if it's got a built-in reg., make sure all wiring, including any small ones are tight, clean, and not showing any bare spots or arcing. Make sure all ground connections are there and tight with no crude or rust. One other thing quick, when the ignition is on with the truck running, make sure you have output at idle and when revving. The first to make sure the ignition switch is letting the system know it's time to go and the second to make sure vibration isn't the problem, broken winding, loose wire ect. Good luck, Chuck P.
