newbie question

I'm new to the forum, and new to diesel's in general. I just bought an 89 F250 4x4 Ext. Cab with the 7.3L diesel. How much oil does this thing hold? I have a buddy that told me 8 gallons, but everyone else I know says he is full of ****. Can someone please clear this up for me? Thanks

Welcome to the forum and the Ford diesel family! I believe they hold 10 qts. the first thing you should do is buy a Haynes repair manual. You can pick them up at most auto parts stores. Don't forget you'll need an extra large oil filter wrench too;-)

Nah ... about 11 quarts with the change. It should be in the owners manual if you got one with the truck or know someone with the same engine (yours is the older style 7.3 idi engine, the power strokes are different and use more oil, but still not that much). Its okay to use some between changes too. Take some time and read the different postings in here and you will learn a lot. Sounds like the guy that you asked doesnt know the difference between poop and shinola. Enjoy the ride and dont over work the starter while cranking the engine.

My old 6.9 held 10 qts. , my '96 7.3 holds 14 qts. . Soooo , when you change the oil add two gal. then check the dip stick and add more to bring it up to the full mark . Remember to fill the filter before you install it ( holds about 2 qts. ) . Have fun with your "new" truck !

So does the Haynes manual but I have to agree with bilder12, it's closer to 11. (Just changed the oil in my '92, 7.3)

I use the powerstroke oil filter FL-1995 Motorcraft filter on mine as opposed to the FL-784 (smaller one) And i fill with 3 gallon, or 12 qts. Whoever is using 7 qts must have an oddball oil pan or something, cause thats way to small

Mine is the same as csramsey640, 3 gallons with the 1995 filter. I have never used a filter wrench, just grab the thing with my hands to tighten and loosen, I keeps me from overtightening it too much and just makes life easier. (p.s walmart has the 1995 filter and rotella oil at a good prices).

good luck and enjoy the new truck.

Thanks all. The thing that threw me was that the guy that told me is a diesel mechanic, he does all the work on our big Fire Trucks for our little volunteer dept. Maybe is was just yankin my chain or something.

I've never used a filter wrench to tighten an oil filter, only to take 'em off.
