Question How about the V-10?

I am looking right now for a good used truck to last me at least 10 years of low mileage driving, probably 10,000 to 15,000 per year, mainly freeway (except the deer hunting and camping part). I am currently looking into a F250 Super Cab, LB, and leaning toward at V-10. Most of the used ones in my area have between 75,000 and 150,000 miles on them (yes thats a large spread and the prices reflect that too) My budget keeps me in the 1996 through 2000 model years. Does anyone have experience with the V-10. My last three trucks were a 94 F350 4X4 Crew Cab, lost it at about 65,000, an 87 Bronco w/5.0 that went 288K before the motor started smoking and an 86 F250 that I sold at about 150,000. I love the 460 but would like to buy a somewhat newer vehicle. Any help would be appreciated.

PS - Looking for a F250 SD, LB, 4X4, Super Cab with possibly the V-10 - am a little concerned about the 5.4 not having enough umph.

I have a '99 with 55K miles. The V-10 is a kick-in-the-pants to drive. You will always have enough umph.

While I love my 99 (I would def. recommend it to anyone), I would look for a 2000 when comparing those two years, since there was a pretty good HP bump in 2000.

You are correct in assuming the 5.4 may not have enough grunt, even the 05 3 valve 5.4 guys are complaining about their (advertised) 300 hp. Cubic inches is cubic inches, and there aint no substitute for cubic inches. Even the older V-10's with 275 horsepower will out perform the newer 260 hp 5.4's. In addition the extra 2 cylinders make for a very smooth running motor. Don't expect to get the deep, low V-8 growl out of a V-10 though, the firing impulses are not similar. The V-10 has a sound signature of it's very own, especially when your foot is pounding the carpet under the gas pedal senseless. There's alot of us with 100K+ on our V-10's, and are still very satisfied with them, go for it, Ken
