Help...My 2002 Ford Explorer's 4x4 high and low lights flash...Dealer says ABS module needs to be replaced...but my ABS light does not flash...Has anyone heard of this?
Sounds more like the 4x4 module to me. It went bad on my 2002 at the 33,000 mile mark.
When it happened to me, it was more than just the light blinking. It was stuck in 4x4 and binding so bad during turns I thought it was going to break something.
I have seen quite a few 02's with bad 4x4 modules. Anything from no 4x4, 4x4 won't disengage and the lights flashing. I am not sure the ABS module could cause this.
Mine flashes and binds real bad on turns. I was told by the shop manager at a local dealer it was a bearing in the rear end. They ran tests on it and found no codes showing on it. Best of luck with your 02, mine might become a lawn ornament
Just had the exact same problem (blinking 4x4 high/low indicators) the last couple of weeks on our '02 XLT Explorer (23k miles).
Dealer replaced the transfer case shift motor and the dash push-botton switch and that didn't fix it. They're replacing the 4x4 module next week and they're "convinced" this time that this is the problem.
My 4x4 won't even engage now. My auto 4x4 was working earlier last week but now I have nothing. I shift to neutral, press my low button and get nothing. My friend at the dealership said that 99% os the time it's either the switch or the relay. I hope to have it fixed this week. I'll let you know what I find out
Yes - it was the control module. According to the work order, the dealer contacted the Ford repair line and was advised to change the control module and the 4x4 switch. It's been about a week now and the 4x4 works fine.
The module is located behind the glove box in the passenger compartment. I have herd that it is very east to install your self. I have not installed on though because the part is still about $300 and it has been summer so no need for 4x4, but I will be doing it soon since winter is moving in.
