I have the CV style drive line, with cv joints on both sides. I want to swap to the Ujoint style drive line, but am concerned that the slip yoke wont attach to the transfer case. How do I go about the swap?
If you go to a driveline shop and have them make one up for you, they will put a flange on the end that will bolt to the existing t-case flange. www.mountaindriveline.com carries a single cardan driveshaft specifically for this purpose. It seems like some of the aftermarket parts houses (www.autozone.com, www.partsamerica.com) have also started to carry driveshafts.
thanks Mrshorty, looks like mountaindriveline.com has figured it out very well. I like their upgraded shaft with the boot. They hae a $189 per shaft sale right now so I will get one from them......thanks!!
I have swapped out my old CV style driveshaft with your average U-joint style, cost me around $200. Although I'm now wondering if I should have...when my BII was recently having a fuel pump replaced I asked the mechanic to take a look at my rear differential. I suspected that some looseness between the driveshaft and differential had been causing a strong vibration. He informed me that the bearing and seal inside the differential were bad and the seal was rotating with the driveshaft. He also proposed that the cause was a result of the switch.
Can anyone validate or refute my mechanic's conclusion?
I dont have much experience with B2s, but I dont think that the proper Ujoint system would/should affect the diff. Because of the slip yoke, there should not have been thrust/pull tension on the diff and parts. Check out the driveline on www.mountaindriveline.com and see if yours matches the build as theirs. I like theirs best because the slip yoke is protected by a boot. Looks stronger too....
Anyones analysis would greatly be appreciated also....
I wasn't warned about potential damage when I purchased my driveshaft. There appears to be nothing about it on Mountain Driveline's site either, perhaps my mechanic was mistaken.
I wouldnt be suprised if the damage was caused by something else, the BII was in bad shape when I bought it. After I get this problem and a couple others fixed over the holidays it should actually be respectable.
