Disconnecting emmission components

I have an 84 F-250 4X4 4 speed. I live in alaska and have no need for any of the junk I have on my tired old 351W. I want to help it breath better and If I pick up a few more MPG so much the better. What do I disconnect and then what do I do with the timing,carb,ect.? I have read that Ford retards timing by 4 degrees for emmission standards, so how do I compensate and What else do you guys recommend?

Unless you swap the carb out for a aftermarket non-emissions 4bbl, intake manifold to match, and dist(if your original does not have a vacuum connection) I would leave it alone.
