I just got this truck, and it's been running beautifully (that always means bad news for me). Now, I've been getting this very loud roar from what I guess is my fan. It's loud enough to make me not want to go above 2500 RPM...which is really bad once I shift into 4th, and the trucks ***** shrink to peanuts =D
I've heard it might be the fan clutch or the water pump, as it seems to be leaking slowly. I cannot pinpoint the exact origin of the leak, as I haven't gotten a real good look at it yet, but I believe it's from the gasket.
At any rate...sometimes I can get it to stop roaring if I just romp it to 3500+ RPM...then the roar goes away (sometimes), and I have my normal engine noise once again. However, it comes back if I shift into the next gear sometimes. Overall, it's happening alot lately, and getting it to stop is getting harder and harder. Sometimes I can't get it to stop no matter the RPM.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated. I knew my old I6 inside and out..but this new 302 is just that....new to me =D Thx in advance
BTW...forgot to add, that when it's "roaring", it's like a leaf blower under my truck which led me to the fan immediately *shrug* Also...temperature seems to have no bearing on the roar at all.
I've priced both parts, and the Water Pump is only 29 bones, whereas the Fan Clutch will cost me a cool 60. Not sure if I'll need to replace the pump, or if I'll just be able to get a new gasket or something and re-seal it well. I'll check back tomorrow and see if anyone has seen this post and has an idea =D
The Fan will roar 1st thing in the morning as the Silicone gel warms up and disperses and disengages the clutch. When the heat is high enough the gel sets up and the roar will come back as the fan speeds up again. Sometimes during the summer it will cycle on and off quite frequently (it's working correctly!) as your desire for A/C demands and also engine heat loads demand.
If it roars almost continuously with slight bouts of calm then replace the clutch. It should roar for the 1st bout of revving then slip out (you'll hear it slow down) until it's needed when the engine heats up.
My vote is fan clutch, sorry. You can replace with a flex fan from your auto parts store fairly reasonably. If your water pump is leaking slightly and you cannot see where, look from the under side when the engine has just been turned off from operating temperature as pressure tries to equalize within the cooling system. 10 to 1 you cannot see the ventral weep hole in the water pump. and it is leaking from there. If it is leaking you're gonna have to replace it sooner or later.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. It's been more of an annoyance than anything else. Sounds like my truck is runnin 4500RPM when it's only runnin 2500. I'm going to replace the Fan Clutch as soon as I can get some "decently warm weather" (yah right ).
Thx again everyone for the input =D I'll post a reply to let ya know how things went and if the problem will be solved afterwards or not
make sure if you change your water pump and fan to check the fan shaft. I had that "roaring" problem on my 95 150 302. Changed the fan clutch and it was still there. Changed out the water pump because of leaking and still a "roar". Well to make a long story short I ended up changing the water pump two more times because the fan shaft was slightly bent, warped and wearing out my water pump. the roaring sound was from the fan wobbling. After I replaced all parts for the last time it went away and has been purring ever since
I had the same problem on my 96 302. Fan clutch. If you have the time and ching switch over to an electric fan. I did and got a little more power and some pretty decent mileage improvement
K...Fan Clutch installed...was an easy 10 minute job. *buzzzzzer*...no go...60 bucks down the drain. Still having the same problem as before. So my simple question...what the heck next? Water pump?...Shaft? I'm stuck on where to go next...
