rusty fords

After smoking my 8.8 (btw, any rear will break when all the lube runs out of a puncture in the rear cover).. I dropped it and started swapping in my locked 9". Highboy1975 will probably be able to attest to the fact that the weather was wonderful in PA (25 and snowing 1" per hour or better) on PA.

Got everything out and was ready to jack the 9" into place and bolt it up. As I wiped the dirt off of the top of the leaf, the top leaf cracked in half. What are the chances of that happening?!!?

now, I have to buy a new rear leaf pack and find a 3.50 gear front.

Don't you just love working on your rusty ford(s)?

There is nothing wrong with working when it is cold. I am even good enough to convince others to help me. My brother in law helped me pull my tranny (again) last year in about 8" snow and 15-20 degrees As far as the rust, that is why I moved from there to out here. Rust sucks. Rusted together parts are worse. I broke tools on my last truck because of rust. split sockets and such. Sucks. Desert is the way to go for old vehicles

I snapped my rear leaf when wheeling but it was one in the middle of the pack. As I was driving it turned sideways and I kept hearing this noise but couldn't make sense of it. Half the spring was hitting the frame as I was going down the road. As I drove up the hill to my house it popped out and nailed the car behind me. THAT made a lot of noise. I told the guy it was a piece of junk in the road that must have gotten thrown up by my tires. Poor sucker.

nope.. 3p sunday, I'm laying on my back... pulling my rear. My ratchet froze to the ground, along with the new rear and other things.

that is never fun.. did it go thru the windshield or just thru the fender?

Well, good news is: I can get a whole new pack for $89; however, if I go to my folk's house, I can grab the top leaf off of my salvaged F250. I think they are the same.. total cost: $0. killing myself in zero degree weather with a breaker bar and sawzall to save $90: priceless.

Tore into his air damn and fender. By the time he spun around the block I'd already picked up the piece of leaf spring so he couldn't even find what caused the damage. Mwahahaha!

Still making excuses for that 8.8 huh?

Congrats on the swap, 9's are great. You went with the nodular center and the 40 spline shafts, right? Or is that what your hoping to find under your tree?

yeah... right after I find that portable dialysis machine I already sold a kidney to buy the rest of my christmas presents.. Actually, I was hoping to find a set of 4-35" boggers, but 40 spline shafts and a spool would be OK too at least it is a locked 9" with 31 spline shafts..
