Steering rack clunk

Steering rack clunk
My 2000 Explorer has developed a slight clunk in the steering rack. Has anybody else experienced this? Upon investigation, I also found a split in the rubber boot that covers the universal joint, just up from where the steering input shaft goes into the rack. With my finger on the rack and my wife turning the steering wheel from side to side, I can feel the clunk in the rack. When driving it is hard to here the clunk.

I think I have the same "clunk" or popping sound in my 98 explorer. It pops with just a slight amount of suspension movement. No squeeks just a pop when it move very slightly. According to some folks on this board, you can clip the boot clamp next to the rack and lube the "dry" joint. Too bad its not at the replaceable tie rod end.
